Japanese-made ten-gallon hat.
A long-selling model featuring a leather belt and upturned brim.
This wild hat with an upturned brim is also known as a Western hat or a ten-gallon hat.
It features an exquisite curve that blends well with Japanese facial features.
The breathable straw material dissipates heat, so your head won't get hot even during summer outdoor activities.
Unisex
When worn by men, it gives a wild and cool impression, and when worn by women, it gives a mannish and active impression.
It naturally blends with everyday casual clothes, T-shirts, linen shirts, denim, etc.
For women, a great point is that it's easy to wear even with your hair tied up.
A comfortable fit for Japanese people
Tanaka Hat Shop uses wooden molds that are shaped to fit the round head of Japanese people.
This reduces the discomfort of the sides rubbing and provides a deep, stable fit.
"Straw" material with excellent breathability, ideal for sun protection
Straw hats cannot be folded, which makes them a little inconvenient to carry,
but they have many unique charms.
These include the texture and coolness unique to natural materials.
Straw glitters slightly when exposed to sunlight.
This is a unique characteristic of straw, as it is not an artificial material.
Its coolness is proven by the fact that many farmers still use it,
as the stem fibers themselves have countless invisible holes,
which are thought to act as air holes after drying.
Also, because it is a slightly stiffer material, the brim does not easily droop even when made long,
making it useful for sun protection.
Even with the upturned brim, the brim is longer than usual, providing sun protection.
Additionally, the chin strap is sewn on from the beginning, making it ideal for trekking and outdoor activities.
The buckle part uses a brass-colored buckle.
The chin strap adjustment part is also made of genuine cowhide, showing attention to detail.
Straw hats are made from natural materials with good breathability, and thanks to a unique sewing method,
their UV cut rate (approx. 99%) is extremely high, making them beloved from ancient times to the present.
Established in 1880 - A long-established shop with over 100 years of history
"Straw hats" are a traditional craft of Kasukabe City, Saitama Prefecture.
Currently, there are few factories in Japan that can mass-produce them, and among them, Tanaka Hat Shop is a long-established company boasting over 100 years of history and tradition.
Straw hats are made using a unique sewing method where 7 strands of straw are braided into one,
and then individually sewn in a circular pattern by artisans.
"Straw," a natural material, is breathable and perfect for sun protection, making it an essential hat for summer.
Tanaka Hat Shop continues to carefully make popular straw hats for all genders and generations, one by one, using traditional methods.
Adjustable adjuster
A hook-and-loop fastener is installed inside the sweatband, allowing for size adjustment by pulling the fastener.
The adjustment range reduces the indicated size by approximately 1.5 cm. Even for those who fit without adjustment, it is useful for fine-tuning on windy days.

Sewing that tests the artisan's tactile sense
Straw braids softened by soaking in water are sewn with a sewing machine for hat making. The sewing begins from the "crown" (called "uzu") of the hat and proceeds by overlapping in a circular pattern.
The sewing progresses carefully, occasionally checking the size with a hat block. The finer the material, the more difficult the sewing becomes, and only skilled artisans can create beautiful shapes. Hats sewn with high-level skill are not only beautiful but also exceptionally comfortable to wear.
A local seasonal tradition: Cold Drying
Straw hats are sewn from autumn to winter for the following spring. After softening the material by soaking it in water, the sewn straw hats are sun-dried.
This is often done during the cold, dry winter, so it is called "kanboshi" (cold drying), and the straw hats lined up across the ground have become a "seasonal tradition" of Kasukabe City.
Molding that gives hats their individuality
Using a dedicated molding machine equipped with a mold, hats are pressed and shaped by water pressure. Depending on the design, the crown and brim may be shaped one by one by hand-steaming, combining separate wooden molds. With numerous molds, various hat designs can be created by combining them.
Decoration
After molding, decorations such as sweatbands and ribbons are applied. All work is done by hand, and artisans carefully sew on each accent ribbon.
Finishing
In the final step, small straw "splinters" are removed. Straw braids can have peeled surfaces or sprouting parts that protrude when woven.
If worn as is, it can feel prickly and uncomfortable. For the wearer's comfort, each of these is cut while stroking the hat with the palm of the hand. This is the thoughtfulness of the artisan, caring for the person who will wear the hat.
