This purely domestic walnut bark basket bag is meticulously handwoven using walnut bark from Oku-Aizu, Fukushima Prefecture.
This piece is the work of Mieko Hasegawa from Mishima Town, Fukushima Prefecture, a region known for its thriving basket weaving crafts.
She is a skilled artisan, and her gentle, cheerful personality seems to emanate as the warmth of her work.


The walnut bark has a beautiful, dried ash-brown texture, which eventually transforms into a deep, subdued reddish-brown as it is used over time.
Compared to wild grapevines, the bark is softer, more flexible, and elastic.
It is light and easy to hold, and its durability, allowing for long-term use, is also an attractive feature.

A perfectly sized, rounded handle that is easy to hang on your arm.
The contrast created by using the back side of the bark adds an accent.


The bark is carefully and uniformly trimmed into thin strips, then meticulously and beautifully woven into an ajiro pattern using the outer surface.


The gusset is robustly woven to maintain its shape, and the square bottom prevents items from shifting around.




The inside of the bag is lined with fabric and features a total of three pockets on the left and right sides.
It also comes with a covering cloth, which is a nice feature for concealing the contents of the bag.
