This is a purely domestic walnut basket bag, hand-woven with care from the bark of walnut trees in Okuaizu, Fukushima Prefecture.
This piece is by Mieko Hasegawa from Mishima Town, Fukushima Prefecture, where basketry is a thriving craft.

Walnut bark has a beautiful, weathered, grayish-brown texture that, with use, matures into a deep, subdued reddish-brown.
